When we speak of hosting servers, there are 3 principal kinds - hosting servers, VPS (Virtual Private Servers) and dedicated packages. Shared web servers accommodate plenty of customers and hence the resources per web hosting account are limited, VPS offer more server configuration independence, but also affect other VPS web servers on the hardware node if used rashly, and dedicated servers offer you the possibility to do everything you see fit without intervening with anyone else.

Why would you need a dedicated servers?

Dedicated servers are usually much more expensive than shared servers or virtual private web hosting servers. Why would anyone, then, want to use them? The explanation is quite simple. If your company has a data-heavy web portal, or simply has very specific server setup requirements, the most intelligent option is a dedicated servers. For somebody who is prepared to invest in security and dependability, the bigger price is not a problem. You are bestowed with full root-level access and can utilize 100 percent of the dedicated web server's resources without anyone else utilizing these resources and messing with your websites.

Hardware specifications

Most web hosting suppliers, including us at 99Web, offer several hardware architectures you can select from according to your necessities. The configurations offer different types of processors, a different number of cores, different RAM and hard disk sizes and different monthly bandwidth usage quotas. You can choose a web hosting Control Panel, which is a useful graphical user interface if you would like to use the dedicated servers for website hosting purposes solely and choose not to resort to a Secure Shell client for all the modifications you will be making. We provide three types of hosting Control Panel software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The Control Panel of your preference

If you are a confident Linux user (our web servers are running on Linux or other Unix-based Operating Systems), you could administer your dedicated packages through SSH exclusively. That, though, could be awkward, even more so if you wish to give root privileges to someone else who has less technical knowledge than yourself. That is why having web hosting CP software pre-installed is a nice idea. The Hepsia hosting CP software tool that we provide does not give you root access and is mainly suitable for somebody who runs multiple websites that devour a lot of resources, but desires to administer the web sites, databases and mailbox aliases via an easy-to-use hosting Control Panel. The DirectAdmin and cPanel hosting CPs, on the other hand, grant complete root access and offer three levels of access - root, reseller and user. If you plan to resell web hosting accounts instead of using the dedicated servers only for yourself, you should pick one of these two.

Web server monitoring and backup procedures

Last but not least, there is the issue of monitoring the dedicated servers and of backing it up. In the event of a problem with your server, such as an unresponsive Apache or a downtime, it is advisable to have some kind of monitoring platform enabled. Here at 99Web the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you order a Managed Services upgrade, they monitor the separate services on the dedicated servers as well. Backups are also a bonus feature - the hosting provider offers you data backups on our own backup web servers. You could pick a kind of RAID that would allow you to keep the very same data on 2 server hard drives as a protective measure in the event of a server hard disk drive failure, or in case someone whom you have ranted full root access erases something by mistake.
